The Switch Game - Lights On, Lights Off

Lights On, Lights Off

Tom has been threatening to turn off Sally, his tenants' electricity for weeks due to her nonpayment of rent. Tom decided to take matters into his own hands today and he shut off Sally's electricity and changed the locks on Sally's apartment door. What should Sally do?

Sally should file an emergency motion with the court to regain access to her apartment. In addition, Sally should notify the court of her landlord's actions in shutting off her electricity and changing the locks on her door. Generally speaking, the law does not permit landlords to engage in self help by changing their tenants locks' and shutting off their tenants' electricity.
